Finding Hope

Hope, an almost illusive word amid the everyday confusion and darkness that abounds in this world. It is like that light switch that can never be found when it is needed the most. Almost inseperable connected with hope is peace. The current trend is to think that since peace is so illusive that hope is just as evasive. Though it may seem that way, hope is not evasive, peace is not illusive. It is possible to find hope.

In order to achieve hope, the hope that brings peace, the only place to look is to the Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. Just as a light house cuts through the darkest night to a lost sailor, the Savior can always be found by those who are lost. The sailor, who before he sees the light from the lighthouse, is without hope. He is resigned to the that all is lost and the sea will surely overcome him. Then the ray from the lighthouse is seen and hope is restored. It doesn’t mean that everything is instantly perfect or easy, but that he is not lost and will eventually make it safely to shore.

When we turn to Christ we find hope. It doesn’t mean that all our problems and troubles will instantly fade and life will be a fairy tale from here on out. It means that we are not lost and eventually everything will be made right. It may even mean that we need to work harder to safely reach the shore.  Also everything may not be made right in this world, it may be in the eternities that everything is made right. But still we can look forward with a firm assurance that it will work out. It is when we have hope for eternities that it makes a difference. Some things are not to be overcome on this earth. Though Christ it can be overcome in eternities.

How do we find or turn to Christ and hope. First we turn to the scriptures. As we read the scriptures, which speak of Christ, we learn “that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope” (Romans 15:4). We can gain hope by reading the scriptures. Something so simple can gives us hope. Because the scriptures testify of Christ we can gain hope through them.

In addition scriptures teach the gospel or good news of Jesus Christ. The gospel can and will give us hope. It is such good news that is described as the “hope of the gospel” (Colossians 1:23). When we have Jesus Christ in our lives and accept the “good news”, hope always comes. It is highly unlikely that when we have Jesus Christ and his Gospel in our lives, that hope will also be found in present. It doesn’t mean that hardships avoid us, but that we have hope that we will make it through them.

We can have “a lively hope” that Jesus is the Christ and that through Him we can return to live with God, our Heavenly Father. Is it possible to find and have hope? Yes it is possible through Jesus Christ.
