The Heavens are Not Sealed

As we read in the Bible, for hundreds of years God communicated to his children, the people on the earth, through prophets.  There were times when the people listened and were blessed. Then there were times when they rejected the prophets and denied themselves the blessings that God had in store for them. So the question begs, “If God spoke to prophets in ancient days, and God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, does God speak today?”

In the year 1820, a young man had this same type of question. This young man’s name was Joseph Smith. His question was one of a slightly more serious nature. Though he was young, he was concerned about his eternal salvation. Since his parents had taught him to find answers in the Bible, that is what he did. He turned to the Bible for answers. Yet when he took his questions to the various religious leaders, they all gave him different answers. He continued to read and came across this verse, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him”(James 1:5).

God has given commandments with promises attach, “prove me now herewith”, he has said.(Malachi 3:10) God gives us commandments and promises blessings. We are to prove him by acting in faith and following those commandments. We “prove” God by testing the commandments. Joseph decided to do this same thing. He decided to ask God, he needed wisdom and God had promised to give it to him.

Early in the spring Joseph decided to offer up a prayer asking God what to do. He retired to a grove of trees near his home and acting in faith prayed.  The experience that followed is best described in his own words,

“I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Joseph Smith- History 1:16-17)

God the Father and his son, Jesus Christ, did appear to Joseph Smith in that grove of trees. They answer his prayer, they knew his name, and the heavens were again open.

I know that Joseph Smith did see God the Father and Jesus Christ. They did speak to him, in that grove of trees. It is a comfort to know that God knows our names, does answer prayers-maybe not in the same way, and that He does speak to man today.

This experiance falls under the defination of a miracle.  To me it is a proof that God does live and does care about his children. And the heavens are not sealed today. To learn more visit

Has the day of miracles cease? Why a need for a prophet?
