A Second Witness

In the New Testament Christ said, “that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established”(Matthew 18:16). The Bible is the first  witness that Jesus is the Christ. The Book of Mormon is the second witness that Jesus is the Christ.

What is the Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is another testament of Christ. It in no ways takes away from or competes with the Bible. The Bible and the Book of Mormon are complimentary to another and work together as witnesses of Christ. The Bible is set in Jerusalem and records God’s dealings with his children there. The Book of Mormon is set in the ancient Americas (North and South America) and a group of people known as the Nephites and Lamanites. The Book of Mormon is their records of God and his association with them.

How the Book of Mormon came to be

The Book of Mormon is a record of the people who lived in the ancient Americas. They originally came from Jerusalem. They had knowledge of God and worshipped him. As in the Bible, they also had prophets that testified of Christ.  The Book of Mormon covers more than 1,000 years of history. It covers their history, but more importantly their knowledge of who God is.

At the close of those 1,000 years, the majority of the people had become wicked. The last surviving righteous man, a prophet, hid the records. He hid the records with the knowledge that at some future time the world would be prepared to receive his testimony of Christ, along with many other testimonies. Until that time, he trusted in God to protect them.

In 1827 the world was prepared to receive the second witness of Christ. The ancient records were given into the care of Joseph Smith. Through the gift and power of God, Joseph Smith was able to translate the plates into English and what is known today as The Book of Mormon.(Introduction to the Book of Mormon)

In speaking of Joseph Smith and the translation of the Book of Mormon, Emma Smith said, “Joseph Smith could neither write nor dictate a coherent and well-worded letter, let alone dictate a book like the Book of Mormon”.

Why we need the Book of Mormon

We need the Book of Mormon for many reasons, but the primary reason is that it restores lost truths. Truths that were lost from the world since Christ’s time are restored through the Book of Mormon.

Another important purpose of the Book of Mormon is to invite all men to come unto Christ(1 Nephi 13:40). Without the added witness of the Book of Mormon important truths about who God is and what our purpose on earth would not be found on this earth. We need the Book of Mormon in addition to the Bible.

The Book of Mormon is the word of God and contains the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The invitation to read the Book of Mormon extends to all people. It is now published in 107 languages, so that the full power of the Book of Mormon can be felt by people of all nations and all tongues.
